Montrose / Museum District
1533 Sul Ross Street, Houston, TX, United States

Riyaaz Qawwali performs a centuries-old devotional music that stems from the Sufis of South Asia. Compositions are being selected to show the depth and diversity of South Asian philosophies of nonviolence. Likely to be included are two poems that were favorites of Gandhi and included in his ashram prayer/song book: the traditional bhajan “Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram” and “Vaishnava Jana to” by the fifteenth-century poet called Narsi.

The concert is designed to introduce qawwali to new audiences and will be interspersed with explanations and translations of the poetry that will be sung in its original language in the qawwali style.

Riyaaz Qawwali is a Texas-based ensemble of Pakistani, Indian, Bangladeshi and American musicians that frequently appears in Houston. Come out for an engaging concert of world music, geared toward audience interaction and maybe even some dancing.
