In honor of the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights adoption on December 10, 1950, today is the annual celebration of Human Rights Day.
The UN has declared the theme this year to be Human Rights 365, as one day a year is not enough. Please see their website for today here.
Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon has declared: “I call on States to honour their obligation to protect human rights every day of the year. I call on people to hold their governments to account. ”
If you know of a demonstration, or a meditation, or an action in the spirit of Mr. Banh’s admonition, please engage in the spirit of Gandhi and take an appropriate action.
The Declaration begins “…recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world…disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind, and the advent of a world in which human beings shall enjoy freedom of speech and belief and freedom from fear and want has been proclaimed as the highest aspiration of the common people…”
Do not let the day pass unmarked.
