Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram is a bhajan (Hindu hymn) that was revered by Mahatma Gandhi. Verses like Ishwar Allah dono tere naam, “Ishwar and Allah are both the names of the same God,” directly spoke to message of togetherness and love that Gandhi imbibed. Moreover, the message is also prevalent in the qawwali genre. Using that bhajan and texts from other authors in our Monday, October 20th, performance, Riyaaz Qawwali explores the theme of the oneness of God and how other authors have expressed the same things.
Gandhi was a philosophical giant of South Asia who continues to influence many even today in their struggles. That message was also present in South Asian literature before him, with poets like Baba Farid, Bulleh Shah and Kabir.
Come for an evening of great music as we explore other philosophical giants that influenced Gandhi’s experiments with togetherness and nonviolence.
